Amite Co. sweeps Loyd Star

LIBERTY – The Amite County Trojans and Lady Trojans captured a sweep over the visiting Loyd Star Hornets Thursday night in Region 7-2A basketball action.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Trojans dominated the Lady Hornets 61-19 to stay unbeaten in the girls’ region race.

In boys’ action, Amite County’s second quarter performance was enough to keep Loyd Star off balance and claim a 64-57 win.

Loyd Star and Amite County will return to action next week as they prepare for their run in the district tournament at Bassfield. The Loyd Star boys will be in action Tuesday as they finished fourth in the boys’ race.

Amite County girls and boys and Loyd Star Girls have secured first round byes and will begin their tournament action Thursday.

Amite County 61, Loyd Star 19 

The Lady Trojans relied on their size and strong aggressive pressure to overpower the Lady Hornets from the start as Amite County claimed a 17-1 lead after one quarter of action and continued to roll in the second quarter to take a 30-8 score into halftime.

Hannah Dickerson was the top scorer for the Lady Hornets (14-10, 6-4) with four points Jordan Shelby and Dickerson were the leaders on the boards with seven rebounds apiece.

“Amite County has a very good girls’ squad,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “They dominated the game with their strong aggressive pressure that forced us to turn over the ball on numerous occasion, which took us out of our game plan.”

Destiny Williams powered the Lady Trojans with 13 points. Dahia Taplin contributed 12 points.

Amite County 64, Loyd Star 57 

The Hornets and Trojans came out and fought hard in the opening quarter as Amite County secured a 14-13 lead.

In the second quarter, the Trojans outscored Loyd Star 26-13 to claim a 40-26 lead at halftime.

In second half, the Hornets (16-7, 5-5) charged back and overpowered the Trojans 31-24, but fell short in their comeback at the end.

Caleb Yarborough paced the Hornets’ offense with a team-high 14 points. Levi Redd provided a double-double performance with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Edrick Alsworth and Ryan Smith netted 10 points apiece.

“The second quarter was the difference of the game,” said Britt. “The guys did a great job fighting hard, but turnovers and bad shot selections hurt us.

“In the second half, the guys did a great job coming back, but fell short at the end,” continued Britt. “Overall, I believed that we did not come mentally prepared to play against a very good Amite County ball club.”

Darrian Robinson was the top shooter for the Trojans with 21 points. Terry Cameron chipped in 17 points and Javontae Anderson had 15 points.
