Chaparrals, Dolphins hand Wolfpack two losses

NEW ORLEANS – The Co-Lin Wolfpack dropped a pair of non-division games in New Orleans on Friday. The College of DuPage (IL) took game one from the Wolfpack 9-2 and fell to the Delgado Dolphins (LA) in game two 7-3.

The Chaparrals, from Glen Ellyn, Ill., took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Elias Perez drew a lead-off walk, advanced to second on an error and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Perez scored on Tom Van Kooten’s sacrifice fly to right field.

DuPage took an 8-1 lead in the top of the third inning taking advantage of three walks and two errors as they sent 11 batters to the plate.

Co-Lin scored a run in the bottom of the third inning. Wesley Watts led off the inning with a single to center field. Mitch Little’s RBI double to left scored Watts.

After two scoreless innings, the Chaparrals took a 9-1 lead. Vidal Gonzales drew a lead-off walk and scored on an Billy McMahon double to center field.

The Wolfpack plated a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Shortstop Ryan Young singled to left and advanced to third on Konner Burke’s double to right. Logan Smith’s sacrifice fly to center field plated Young.

Tomas Aguilar was the winning pitcher allowing one run on four hits and striking out five in 3.2 innings. Jason Adams relieved Aguilar in the fourth inning. Adams allowed one run on two hits and struck out two.

Starter Newt Brown took the loss giving up seven runs (four earned) on three hits, walked four and struck out none in 2.1 innings of work. Matthew Evans relieved Brown in the third inning. Evans allowed one run on one hit, walked three and struck out one in 2.2 innings. Tanner Parvin pitched the final two innings giving up one run on one hit, walking one and striking out one.

At the plate for the Chaparrals, McMahon doubled. Hitting safely were Tyler Butler, Mike Hansen, Van Kooten, and Perez.

For the Wolfpack, Young singled twice. Burke and Little doubled. Adding support with a single apiece were Dominic Savage and Watts.

Delgado 7, Co-Lin 3 

The Dolphins took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With one out, Josh Watkins singled to left field and advanced to second on an Austin Berrios ground out. Cody Decote’s single to right scored Watkins.

In the top of the third inning, catcher Logan Smith led off with a walk. Philip Lott came in as the courtesy runner for Smith. Adrian Brown singled to left advancing Lott to third. An error by the catcher scored Lott and advanced Brown to second. Another Delgado error allowed Brown to score and the Wolfpack took a 2-1 lead.

The Dolphins regained the lead in the bottom half of the third inning. Conner Charbat drew a one out walk. Watkins singled to right field. Charbat advanced to third on a wild pitch. Berrois drew a walk to load the bases. Ducote’s RBI single to left field scored Charbat to tie the game at 2-all. With the bases still loaded, Adams was hit by a pitch scoring Watkins and giving the Dolphins a 3-2 lead.

Co-Lin would tie the game in the top of the fourth. Konner Burke drew a two-out walk. Logan Smith’s RBI double to center plated Burke.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Berrois was hit by a pitch and stole second. With two outs, Cailllouet reached on an error allowing Berrois scored to give the Dolphins a 4-3 lead.

Delgado added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the 7-3 lead.

Scott Stonestreet recorded the win pitching 2.1 shutout innings. He struck out five and walked one. Starter Brooks Vial allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits, walked three and struck out four.

Jonathan Haydel took the loss for the Wolfapck. He allowed one fun and struck out five. Starter Alex Smith gave up three runs on five hits, walked two and struck out one in 2.1 innings. Corey Funk relieved Haydel in the sixth inning. He allowed three runs on three hits (two earned) struck out none and walked none. Wesley Watts pitched .2 shutout innings.

At the plate for the Dolphins, Watkins was 3-for-4 with three singles. Ducote had a pair of singles. Charbat doubled. Adding support with a single apiece were Berrios, and Cole Freeman.

For Co-Lin, Young led the way at the plate with a pair of singles. Logan Smith doubled. Also hitting safely was Adrian Brown.

The Wolfpack host Kaskaskia (IL) for a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
