The Centreville Academy Tigers pushed across one run in the top of the seventh inning Saturday afternoon and held on to edge out Brookhaven Academy 4-3 in baseball action at Harold Williams Ballpark.
BA pounded out 12 hits in the game but couldn’t plate a runner in their last at bat to overtake the Tigers.
“We did some good things at the plate but didn’t make some plays in the field, and it sort of carried over inning after inning and eventually caught up with us,” said BA head coach Casey Edwards.
“We’ll learn from this, and hopefully be mentally tougher next time we face them later in the season.”
Landon Nettles led the Cougars with three hits, including two doubles. Steven Williams and Alex Smith added two hits each in the afternoon of work. Jacob Boyd and John Coleman both doubled for BA. Heath Hickman, Bailey Warren and Zach Dickerson added support with a single each.
Dickerson absorbed the loss on the mound in six and a third innings of work striking out eight and issuing only one base on balls. Casey Haygood picked up the win for the Tigers in short relief of Colby Shaw.
In junior varsity action, Centreville defeated BA.
Trailing 3-1 going into the last inning, the CA Tigers scored 10 runs and eventually defeated BA 11-3.
William King, Madison Smith, Lamar Lang, Austin Smith and Taylor Freeny each hit safely for the Cougars. Freeny absorbed the loss in relief of Madison Smith. Zac Moore picked up the win for the Tigers.
BA will be back in action Monday afternoon when they travel to Ridgeland High School to participate in the Titan Classic taking on Warren Central at 2 p.m.
