Patrick named school board chairman

Brookhaven School Board members met Tuesday and renewed teachers and principals’ contracts and also renewed Robert O. Allen as board attorney.

Members also accepted the changes made annually to the position of board members. This year Stan Patrick moved from serving as vice chairman to serving as chairman.

This year James Tillman will serve as vice chairman and Erin Smith will remain as secretary. Other board members are Pat Lowery and former chairman Willie Harrison.

Members also accepted a bid from Rowell Roofing who bid more in line with the architects estimate at $1,269,000. Roofs to be refurbished are Alexander Junior High’s gym, Fannie Mullins’s administrative wing and their cafeteria and Brookhaven High School’s gym.

“The grouting and ceiling of the stadium will get new cement this year,” Cox said. “The stadium itself is structurally sound. This is for components of the stadium. Wherever there are cracks and crevices in the cement we are going to fill and smooth.”

The last day of school is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21, and will be a 60 percent day.

In other business board members:

• Approved of school fundraisers for the golf team, carpentry class, the Brookhaven Elementary PTA and softball.

• Accepted student transfers.

• Approved a proposed bus turnaround.

• Processed a release of a lease agreement and accepted two new agreements at Crooked Lane and on Coopertown Road for 16th Section land.

• Completed and approved of the grant application for the gifted and special education programs.

• Accepted the financial report from director of finance Susan Cochran. Cochran was also commended by Cox and the state auditor’s office for having a good audit.

The next school board meeting will be 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, in the district office, 326 E. Court St.
