PRENTISS – The Brookhaven Academy Cougars traveled to the heart of Jefferson Davis County to take on the Prentiss Christian Saints for the second time in two days.
Like their previous contest, the Cougars got great pitching and stacked up the hits to shut out the Saints 9-0 and close out their district play.
“Our guys took care of business today,” said BA coach Casey Edwards following the game. “Michael (Fiorella) did a real good job on the mound and we put some runs up early which is good to see.” “Our pitching staff had done a great job all year and we’re expecting big things from them in the playoffs.”
Landon Nettles led the Cougar offensive attack with a double, two singles and three RBIs. Bailey Warren and Steven Williams each had two hits on the afternoon, both with a double to their credit. JP Jackson, Alex Smith and Newt Riley each singled twice for the Cougars. Zach Dickerson and Heath Hickman rounded out the Cougar 15 hit onslaught with a double apiece. Austin Daughdrill led the Saints with two hits.
Michael Fiorella pitched a solid seven innings to pick up the win for BA. Fiorella finished the night with eight strikeouts, gave up five hits and issued only one base on balls. Blake Greenlee absorbed the loss for Prentiss.
In junior varsity action, The Cougars jumped on the Saints early and never looked back en-route to a 10-0 victory.
Carter Culbertson led the Cougars with 2 hits for the game. Connor Dorman opened the game with a triple to get the Cougar 5-run first inning kick started. Dylan Winborne and Austin Smith both doubled for the Cougars adding to the BA hit total.
Winborne picked up the shutout win on the hill with nine strikeouts and issuing just two bases on balls.
