An Anguilla man was killed in a single-vehicle traffic accident on Interstate 55 in Lincoln County early Sunday morning.

Sgt. Benjamin R. Boyd with the Mississippi Highway Patrol said troopers responded to the accident on I-55 south bound at mile marker 46 at 12:47 a.m. Sunday.

A 2012 International 18-wheeler, driven by Henry L. Thomas, 59, of 102 Ashley St., Anguilla, was south bound on I-55 and ran off the left side of the roadway into the median and collided with a tree and caught fire, Boyd said.

Troopers said it was unknown if Thomas was wearing an occupant restraint at the time of the collision. He was pronounced dead on the scene by the Lincoln County coroner.

The International was owned by Heartland Express and was loaded with dog food.

One lane of traffic was blocked by the Mississippi Department of Transportation for several hours until the scene was cleared.

The collision is still under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
