Three local women teams from Brookhaven will be looking to bring home some tennis trophies this weekend. They are competing in the 40 & over USTA (United States Tennis Association) Adults Tennis League for the State Championship on the Gulf Coast.

Tournament action starts Friday for Team Rayborn, Team Netherland and Team Montalvo of Brookhill in the women’s division. In the men’s division 40 & over league, Team Woodworth of Fernwood Country Club will be representing the USTA SW Adult League. The tournament matches will be held in four different locations along the coast.

USTA Adult League began their season at the end of February with 35 teams, 397 players, competing in Southwest Mississippi. By the second week in May, eleven teams finished the season as champions in their divisions.

One team, Bedsole, competed in the MS 55 & Over League championship in Greenville last month and had a good weekend of action.

In the 18 & Over league, six teams will be representing Brookhaven in their state championship quest on the last weekend of June. The teams competing are Team Palmer, Team Johnson, Team Misner and Team Fisher in the women’s division. Representing the men’s division is Team Garrett and Team Shelby.

Each team has 8 to 14 members of the team. The team will compete on five court: Two singles matches and three Double matches. Winner of the best-of-five advances.

As these teams are currently in championship action, the league play for the Mixed Doubles and Tri-Level Doubles has already begun.

“We have 23 teams competing in these two leagues,” said Leanne Summers, USTA Southwest Local League Coordinator.

Summers also stated that during the month of June, the Brookhaven Tennis Association will be providing Junior Team Tennis for kids 10 & under at the Brookhaven City Courts on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6-7 p.m.
