FLORENCE – The Lawrence County Lady Cougars hammered the Florence Lady Eagles 14-0 in high school slowpitch softball action, at Florence High School. The Lady Cougars exploded for 10 runs in the top of the third to blow the game open.
With the win, Meleah Howard’s Lady Cougars improved to 4-2 on the season. After struggling at the plate in the early season, Lawrence County sizzled at Florence, banging out 20 hits in just four innings of hitting, including three homeruns.
Jamie Martin homered in the top of the first to stake the Lady Cougars to a 2-0 lead. In the big third inning, Alexsundria Thomas and Tiera Collins went back-to-back. Thirteen consecutive LCHS batters got hits in that frame.
“It was good to see us hit the ball,” said Howard. “In slow pitch softball, hitting is very contagious. We really hadn’t put many hits together until tonight. Hopefully, we’ll keep it up.”
Collins and Martin each had four hits to lead Lawrence County. Madison Hyde and Maddux Kirkland each had three. Thomas, Callie Fortenberry, Cierra Horton, Lexie Johnson, Cheyenne Long, and Barri Rogers also hit safely. Florence, meanwhile, managed just four singles in the game.
Lawrence County returns home on Thursday, hosting Wesson.
