Funeral Services for Catherine Davis May, a native of Brookhaven and a long-time resident of Alexandria, Louisiana, were 3 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10, 2014, at Hixson Brothers Chapel with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. Dr. Lee Weems officiated. Hixson Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation was Monday, Nov. 10, 2014, from 2 p.m. until time of service at Hixson Brothers Chapel.

Mrs. May, 97, died Nov. 8, 2014, at her residence.

Mrs. May was an honor graduate of Millsaps College in Jackson. She taught school in Vicksburg, Brookhaven, Memphis, Tennessee, and at Copiah-Lincoln Community College.

Following Pearl Harbor, she planned to join her brothers in military service, but both brothers objected. Instead she joined the American Red Cross and received training at American University in Washington D.C. to work with recreation for wounded hospitalized soldiers. After the war, she was transferred to Barksdale Air Force Base where she met and married her Red Cross director, Freeman E. May.

Mrs. May was an active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, worked with the music program and was a member of the church choir. She was also involved in community music activities and for years was a performing member of the Matinee Musical Club and a popular guest soloist in church choirs.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Freeman Erby May; her parents, Susie Middleton Davis and Robert Lowry Davis; and her two brothers, Bob Davis, Jr., and Tom Davis

Survivors are her cousin, Miriam Moyer of Brookhaven.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 28105.
