Funeral Services for Leatrice Collins Buie of Brookhaven are 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014, at Bethel AME Church with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery. The Rev. Andrew Stamps will officiate. Tyler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation is Friday, Dec. 26, 2014, from 1 until 7 p.m. with the family present from 6 until 7 p.m. at Tyler Funeral Home.
Mrs. Buie, 88, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2014, at King’s Daughters Medical Center. She was born on Oct. 22, 1926, in Lincoln County to Frederick “Fred” and Lucretia Truvillion Collins.
She was a member of the graduating class of Alexander High School, 1944, and a 1948 graduate of Alcorn A & M College in Lorman, with further studies at Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama. While at Alcorn she was initiated as charter member of the Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.
She later went on to teach at Alexander High School and became actively involved in the community serving Lincoln County as a Girl Scout leader, former president and treasurer of the Gamma Beta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.
Her last five years of her teaching career were served in the Clarksdale Separate School District. Upon retirement, she returned to Brookhaven and served as an election poll watcher, served on the Executive Board of the NAACP, the Lincoln County Alcorn State University Alumni Association and Booster Club, alumni status with the Mississippi Natchez Chapter of the Links, Inc. and life member of the Alcorn State University Alumni Association. She was inducted into the Alexander High School Legacy Hall of Honor in 2014.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and her husband, Jessie Buie.
Survivors are her children, Jessie “Al” Buie (Geraldine), Sylvia Buie, Larry Buie (Hester), Frederick Buie (Valeska), Wilda Holloway (James) and Vallerie Buie Donald (William); 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; her trusted companion “Jiggy”; and a host of other relatives and friends.
