West Lincoln falls in Region Tournament action

LIBERTY – The West Lincoln Bears and the Lady Bears suffered two tough setbacks in Region 7-2A tournament action Thursday night at Amite County high school.

In the girls contest, the Loyd Star Lady Hornets battled the Lady Bears in a low-scoring game and prevailed 17-16.

In boys action, the Bassfield Yellowjackets relied on a second half surge to defeat the Bears 55-49.

Tournament action continues today as the Lady Bears take on Bassfield in the girls consolation game at 4 p.m. The Bears will also be playing the boys consolation game against Amite County at 5:30 p.m.

The West Lincoln Lady Bears (11-16) and Loyd Star Lady Hornets battled for the fourth time this basketball season as they took on one another in the Region 7-2A tournament.

Both teams struggled to score offensively in the first quarter and remained scoreless until Loyd star was able to score 10 points in the second quarter.

West Lincoln came out strong in the third quarter and took a 12-10 lead. The Lady hornets out scored the Lady Bears 7-4 in the final quarter to take the win 17-16.

The Loyd Star Lady Hornets will play Amite county at 7 p.m.

Alli Mullins led the Lady Bears in scoring with eight points. Demeshia Dear and Hanna Moak each scored four points.

McKenzie Smith led the Lady Hornets with nine points. Marcey Givens scored five points.

The West Lincoln Bears (13-15)  faced the Bassfield Yellowjackets in the second round of the district tournament.

The Bears managed to claim a narrow 14-12 lead after the first quarter. West Lincoln out scored Bassfield 14-11 in the second quarter to take a five-point lead into halftime 28-23.

In the second half, Bassfield returned from halftime refreshed and took the lead after three periods 43-41. In the final period, West Lincoln was unable to regain the lead and fell to the Yellowjackets 49-55.

Leading scorer for West Lincoln was Ronnie Edwards with 23 points and six rebounds. Ke-Shaun London added 17 points. Javian Mackabee pulled down seven rebounds.
