Cathedral defeats Loyd Star

NATCHEZ – The Natchez Cathedral Green Wave defeated the Loyd Star Hornets 6-4 in Saturday’s baseball action.
“We came out flat and were not ready to play ball,” said Loyd star coach Jared Britt. “We had some costly miscues in the game, but we need to put this game behind us and start getting ready for Enterprise this week.”
The Hornets (7-5, 4-0) will be action Tuesday for another big division series test against their Lincoln County arch region rivals, the Enterprise Jackets. Junior varsity is set to start at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6:30 p.m. at Smith Field.
Cathedral 6, Loyd Star 4
The Loyd Star Hornets and the Cathedral Green Wave fought in a close contest in the first three innings of action as the Hornets secured a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Green Wave scored four run on Loyd Star to take the lead at 5-2, but the Hornets battle back in the top of the fourth inning to cut down Cathedral’s lead after scoring two runs.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Green Wave would add an insurance run to increase their lead to 6-4 and defend off the Hornets in the top of the seventh inning to collect the win.
Konner Allen suffered the setback on the mound for the Hornets with four strikeouts and one walk.
Gabe Smith pitched the win for Cathedral with two strikeouts and five walks.
Cade Hodges, Caleb Yarborough, Brett Calcote, Bradyn Brister and Cole Smith directed the Hornets’ at the plate with a single apiece.
Gabe Smith led the Green wave offense with two singles. Zach Flattmann, Quinton Leggett, Brock Farmer and Reed White hit safely.
