Gulf Coast slips past Co-Lin

PERKINSTON – The Copiah-Lincoln Lady Wolves dropped two one-run games on Friday in Perkinston to No. 13 Gulf Coast. The Lady Bulldogs got a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh inning to take game one 7-6. In game two Gulf Coast rallied in the sixth inning to give themselves a 4-3 win.

Gulf Coast 7, Co-Lin 6 

Trailing 5-2 in their final turn at bat, Co-Lin plated four runs to take a 6-2 lead. Co-Lin started the inning off with a double by sophomore Savannah Johnston. Johnston moved to third after a Payton Sheffield single. The bases were then loaded when Jessica Crum drew a walk. Breanna McKenzie scored Johnston and pinch runner Greta Carley with a two RBI single. Brittany Barbay and Kaitlyn Taylor had an RBI single apiece later in the inning to build the Co-Lin lead. Taylor finished 3-4 with two singles, a homerun, and two RBIs. The Lady Wolves outhit Gulf Coast 17-10.

Kamry Creel took the loss for Co-Lin after giving up seven runs on ten hits and striking out four.

“Six of our division losses have been by one run, it feels like we’ve been snakebit,” said Lady Wolves head coach Allen Kent.

Gulf Coast 4, Co-Lin 3 

Taylor hit her second home run of the day in game two. The freshman from Copiah Academy finished the game 2-3 with two RBIs. Co-Lin led 3-2 after the top of the sixth inning, but saw Gulf Coast score two runs in the bottom half to take the victory. Freshman Lucy Lewis suffered the loss after striking out one and giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits in six innings. Co-Lin committed two errors.

“Kaitlyn had a great day offensively and we showed a lot of heart in a tough place to play,” said Kent.

Co-Lin (11-13, 5-11 Division) returns to action on Monday when they travel to Southwest for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
