HATTIESBURG – James McMahon provided another strong starting assignment and Dylan Burdeaux added a career-high tying three hits to lead Southern Miss to a 3-2 Conference USA series-winning victory over UAB here Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (17-11-1 overall, 6-5 C-USA) won the final two games of the set after dropping the opener on Thursday night.
McMahon (6-0) retired the first nine batters, before giving up a single to Chase Davis to start the fourth. He then added eight more batters set down before allowing another single to Davis and an RBI double to Nathan Vincent in the sixth inning to snap a string of 23 2/3 scoreless innings for the senior from Hattiesburg.
The right-hander then surrendered consecutive hits to start the seventh, the second an RBI double from Adam Lau, ending McMahon’s day who allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts to capture his sixth win in eight starts this season.
The Golden Eagles then sent in reliever Luke Lowery, and Lau stole third and then tried to go home on an errant throw from USM catcher Austin Roussel. Breck Kline – who came in to play leftfield after pinch hitting in the bottom of the previous inning – retrieved the ball and released a strong one-hop throw that nailed Lau at the plate. Lowery then registered a punchout to end the inning and the UAB threat.
Cody Livingston then came on and retired all six batters he faced over the final two innings, including one strikeout, to earn his second save of the year.
