Lady Cougars nip Purvis

Lawrence County Elizabeth Smith’s RBI single in the sixth inning helped her Lady Cougars edge the Purvis Lady Tornadoes 5-4, Monday night in a make up Region 7-4A softball contest.
The Lady Cougars (20-5, 5-3) will begin Class 4A state playoff action Thursday.

The Lady Cougars and the Lady Tornadoes battled in a close contest Monday night after picking up where they left off after the game was postponed last Tuesday due to rain.
Purvis took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Lady Cougars rallied back to outscore the Lady Tornadoes 5-3 in the final three innings of action.
Lawrence County’s Elizabeth Smith RBI single in the top of the sixth inning managed to score Callie Fortenberry to give the Lady Cougars the potential game winning run.
LCHS would not relinquish the lead as Purvis scored three runs in the seventh on three singles but failed to score the tying run.
Elizabeth Smith recorded the win for Lawrence County. She allowed only four runs on 11 hits in seven innings of work. Smith struck out two batters and had only one walk.
Jamie Martin paced the Lady Cougars offense with a double and a single. Callie Fortenberry, Lexie Johnson and Tiera Collins contributed two singles each. Maddux Kirkland and Elizabeth Smith provided a single each.
