Mortal Kombat kauses Moral Konflict

Hypocrite: 1: (noun) the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one’s own behavior does not conform. 2: (geek) when a hippo rolls double sixes on his attack roll.

I have a confession. A couple weeks ago I wrote an article on Mortal Kombat X and why I would not be purchasing it. Yeah … about that.

After watching hours of footage and talking with friends about how great the game was, like a surfer smashing into a dock, I, too, succumbed to peer pressure. I traded in my first person shooter collection and bought Mortal Kombat X for Xbox One, and I gotta say, THIS GAME IS AWESOME!

If you’ve kept up with my articles, you know I value story over gameplay in any game I play. When I was a teenager, the mythos behind Mortal Kombat was very intriguing, and I read it all. I beat every title with every character just so I could see the endings and learn what happened to my favorite fighters. I spent hours poring over books and magazines. I LOVED it.

Then the dark times of Mortal Kombat 4 and beyond happened, and the story became watered down and silly. So I lost interest and moved on to greener pastures.

Oh, but now, the story has been retcon’ed (see earlier article) so that all the mistakes of the last four titles have been washed away, and a new, well scripted and excellently performed cinematic style story mode is available, and it does not disappoint.

With voice talents like Tara Strong and Steve Blum (Google ‘em), the stories are delivered as professionally as any movie, and 1000 times more entertaining than Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

As for the gore, it’s comical in how “over-the-top” it is. From hurling bladed toddlers to the killer selfies, this game doesn’t take itself seriously, so I won’t either.

Do I let my 10 year old son play it? Are you nuts!? They’re hurling bladed toddlers and taking killer selfies!!

Class dismissed.
