Eva Harris and Lincoln County Schools Alumni Committee invites you to participate in this year’s parade that will be on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. on July 11 in downtown Brookhaven. The line-up will be at 8:30 a.m. by the post office. You are welcome to watch from the sidelines or participate in the following ways: ride in the parade to represent your business, your status and your leadership; you can ride your motorbikes, corvette cars, trucks, other vehicles or other. All teachers and faculty members are encouraged to participate and all former students are encouraged to participate. Floats are encouraged by all who are interested in doing one, especially former students by classes of Lincoln County Training School, Friendship, Progress and Eva H. Harris.

The alumni committee members along with the former students of Eva H. Harris, Progress, Friendship and Lincoln County Training School would like to welcome our grand marshalls for the 10th School Reunion Parade. They are Evangelist Willie Ray Watkins, Robert L. Barnes Jr., Cora Bracey Edwards and Curtis Tyner. These grand marshals have served the alumni well throughout the years in their different capacities, and we salute each of them. Watkins and Barnes were featured last week.

Grand Marshall Cora Bracey Edwards is the daughter of the late Henry and the late  Alline Eddington Bracey of Bogue Chitto. The foundation of her life’s work and her spiritual commitments were established at an early age by her parents. Through them she was encouraged to excel well academically, socially and spiritually. Cora’s academic accomplishments started at Lincoln County Training School in the Bogue Chitto community. She furthered her studies at Eva H. Harris School where she had the honor of being the valedictorian of the Class of 1966. She is the recipient of the Bachelor of Arts Degree in economics, master’s degree in early childhood education, master’s degree in administration, master’s degree in psychometrics and specialist degree in special education from Jackson State University in Jackson. She began her teaching profession as an intern with Hinds County/Jackson State University Teacher Corps. She has taught in Jackson Public School System and retired from the Brookhaven Public School District (with one class taught at the Eva H. Harris School Campus) with thirty years of teaching experience.

Cora is married to Rev. Eugene Edwards, and they are the proud parents of four children and the proud grandparents of ten grandchildren. She is a member of New Zion Union M. B. Church where her husband serves as pastor. She serves in many community affairs and church ministries.

Cora was instrumental in the formation of this alumni group and was proud to work with such people as: Mr. Clarence B. Johnson, Mr. Melton McMorris Sr., Steve Tillman, Myra Black, Carolyn Beard Humphries, Willie Ray Watkins, Elaine Pendleton, Janet Holmes, Robert Barnes and many more who were interested in forming an Eva Hall Harris & Lincoln County Schools Alumni Reunion Committee. This interest led her to being elected as president of this group in 1995 and she served well until 2008. She had the distinct opportunity to serve for 13 years and through five reunions.

Grand Marshall Brother Curtis Tyner is the oldest son of the late Lonnie and Doris Tyner, he grew up with his younger brother Earl Tyner. He attended Progress Elementary School where he excelled well for six years. His high school educational goals were attained from Eva H. Harris School where he completed classes seven through twelfth and was a member of the 1966 Graduating Class. He attended college at Prentiss Institute in Prentiss and after one year he changed to Utica Junior College at Utica where he obtained a degree in Electricity. Curtis worked at the Lincoln County Extension office with Mr. R. C. Paige of the Agriculture Department of Alcorn College, among other jobs before gaining employment at Entergy (formerly Mississippi Power & Light Co.) in 1973, which was his dream job in his field. He worked long hours in all types of weather; but he loved serving the people as he helped to maintain and restore energy. On Jan. 26, 2012 Curtis Tyner had the opportunity to retire after 33 years of dedicated service to this company.

Curtis is married to Beatrice Adams Tyner and they are the proud parents of two boys and are also proud grandparents. He has been a minister for over 40 years and has served at Jericho Church of Christ where his family attends with him under the leadership of Brother Robert Adams, Jr.

Curtis is currently serving as the president of the Eva Hall Harris and Lincoln County Schools Alumni Association. He has served since 2008 and has been instrumental in helping to prepare for the 2009, the 2011, 2013 and now the 2015 School Reunions. This 10th year is a commemorative one for this group and Curtis along with the Vice President Mozel Jackson and the committee members are planning to make it special for everyone who attends. He extends a “special welcome” to all of you.

All faculty and alumni members are encouraged to please plan to attend the next couple of meetings to be held at the public library at 6 p.m. on June 30 and at 6 p.m. on July 2. After these meetings the work will physically begin in order to prepare at the Lincoln County Civic Center and all other places for the reunion on July 10 – 12. The first event will be the Legacy Hall of Honor program to be held at the Civic Center on July 10 at 11 a.m. with several nominees being inducted. That night there will be the talent show, fish fry and dance at the Civic Center at 7 p.m. There is a great show, plenty of good food and wonderful music planned for your enjoyment. Please contact an alumni member if you have any questions or if you need to pay your fees.
