BILOXI (AP) – Red snapper season opens in Mississippi waters July 16.

Jamie Miller, executive director of the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, said in a news release that the season opens at 12:01 a.m. July 16 and runs through 11:59 p.m. Oct. 31.

Miller says the bag limit will be two red snapper per person and a minimum size of 16 inches.

Anglers are required to report a planned trip and their catches.

State law makers extended state waters to nine miles for fisheries management effective July 1, 2013. However, Miller says federal law doesn’t recognize that distance for red snapper fishing.

Anglers found fishing for red snapper beyond 3 miles south of the barrier islands can receive a citation.
