Public Works Director Steve Moreton said that workers are bringing curbs along a stretch of road between Monticello Street and Highway 51 to standards set forth by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. He said the project focuses on rebuilding ramps at curbs that will make sidewalks more accessible to differently abled individuals.

Brookhaven and Mississippi Department of Transportation team up to make sure sidewalks on Brookway Boulevard are complainant with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The project is expected to cost around $800,000.

He said that with certain funds from the government the city receives it has to make sure all areas are in compliance with ADA standards. At the end of this project all areas that aren’t already up-to-code will be.

“There was a lot of paperwork and still there is more paperwork,” Moreton said about the project, which has been in the works for a couple of years now.

He said the project costs around $800,000 with the city being responsible for about $150,000 to $175,000 of that while the rest is being paid for by the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

“I really appreciate MDOT Commissioner Tom King and the other MDOT officials from the area,” Moreton said. “Probably without MDOT’s help, we wouldn’t be able to do it.”

He said that other projects the department is working on include sewer work. Moreton said his department is completing sewer work around Natchez Avenue and Ellen Street. He said next week they will be doing sewer work through a Community Development Block Grant in Ward 3.
