JACKSON, Tenn. – Matt Lipka’s outfield assist at home in the ninth inning preserved a Mississippi Braves 1-0 win over the Jackson Generals on Monday night at the Ballpark at Jackson.
The Generals (7-16, 36-55) loaded the bases in the ninth against closer Tyler Jones (S, 11) with a Julio Morban triple and walks to Marcus Littlewood and Jabari Henry.
With one out, Tyler Bortnick flied to Lipka in shallow center. Morban tagged from third and Lipka threw a perfect strike to Steve Rodriguez at home for the final out of the ballgame, preserving the 1-0 win.
It was the fifth straight win for the M-Braves (15-9, 48-44), and manager Aaron Holbert’s 269th career victory, putting him alone atop the M-Braves’ all-time wins list. The win unseated Phillip Wellman, who posted a 268-285 record over four seasons from 2007-2010. Holbert is 269-240 over three-plus years.
Mississippi scored the lone run in the second. Generals starter Misael Siverio (4-9) walked David Rohm with one out, and Matt Kennelly singled to move him into scoring position. Sean Godfrey drove him home with a single over short for a 1-0 lead.
Siverio allowed just the one run on three hits over six innings, walking two and striking out two in the losing decision.
Andrew Barbosa (2-1) stifled the Generals over five shutout frames, allowing just five hits and striking out three to pick up the win.
Bryton Trepagnier hurled two scoreless innings and Andrew Robinson added another scoreless frame in relief.
The Generals stranded nine men on base in the loss.
The M-Braves and Generals wrap up the quick two-game series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at the Ballpark at Jackson, with right-hander Lucas Sims slated to make his double-A debut against Generals right-hander Moises Hernandez (3-5, 4.30).
