Stay safe in summer heat

It’s still hot. Of course, you already knew that.
But the National Weather Service says it’s unusually hot and has issued a heat advisory in effect until 7 p.m. today.
The NWS says temperatures today will peak between 96 and 99, with heat index values peaking from 106 to 110.
The combination of high temperatures and humidity will create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. The weather service recommends that anyone outside drink plenty of fluids and stay out of the sun. Better yet, try to stay inside where it’s cool.
Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances, but doing so can be deadly when it’s this hot. Temperatures inside a vehicle can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
The CDC advises that people know the signs of heat illness. Heavy sweating, weakness, fast and weak pulse, nausea and fainting are signs of heat exhaustion. Hot, red skin, rapid and strong pulse and possible unconsciousness are signs of heat stroke.
If you suspect someone is suffering from a heat stroke, call 911 immediately. You should also move the person to a cooler environment and reduce the person’s body temperature with cool cloths or even a bath. Do not give fluids.
