Simpson edges BA in extra innings

MENDENHALL – The Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars fell to the Simpson Academy Lady Cougars 6-5 in an eight-inning district battle Tuesday night in MAIS fastpitch softball action.

BA (7-9, 0-4)), coached by Becky Flowers, will resume action Saturday as it hosts the Bowling Green Lady Buccaneers. Junior varsity action begins at 11 a.m., followed by the varsity game at 12:30 p.m.

In a defensive battle between Cougars, Simpson Academy secured an early 3-0 lead in two innings of action, before BA rallied back in the top of third inning to cut into Simpson’s lead at 3-2

The Mendenhall-based Cougars managed to increase their lead in the fifth inning by scoring two runs to secure a 5-2 advantage.

In the top of the seventh inning, the BA Lady Cougars roared back with a three-run surge to tie the contest at 5-5 to force extra innings.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Simpson Academy captured a 6-5 win after pushing across the winning run from second base.

“Every game in our district run has come down to extra innings,” said Flowers. “Overall, my girls are continuing to improve in practice and in each game. We were just one break from ending this game differently. Now, we must regroup and go back to work to get ready for Saturday’s game”

Allie Summers suffered the setback on the rubber for BA with five strikeouts and one walk.

Allison Livingston, Allie Summers and Cameron Watson powered BA’s offensive attack at the plate with two singles each. Anna Grace Covington contributed a double. Alex Rae Smith and Abeni Fuller hit safely.
