Brookway Boulevard will soon offer a new place to shop when Hobie’s Sports opens in October.

Located next to Save-A-Lot, Hobie’s Sports will serve the community as a full-line sporting goods store, offering everything thing from athletics to outerwear to hunting goods. They will feature brands, such as Nike, Adidas, New Balance, UnderArmour, North Face, Patagonia and Columbia. There will be both a gun department and archery area to appeal to the outdoorsman.

“We’ll have a little bit of everything,” Hobie’s Sports owner Jason Martin-Nez said.

The store’s variety ensures that they will have a little bit of something for everyone. Whether it’s children looking at ball equipment or parents looking at hunting gear, Martin-Nez hopes the store will be a place for the entire family.

In fact, family atmosphere is why he chose Brookhaven.

“We looked across the state,” he said. “I thought Brookhaven had what we needed to succeed. Me and my family visited the community multiple times.”

And so far, Martin-Nez’s instinct has proven correct.

“People have treated us very, very well,” he said.

Family roots have always been important to Martin-Nez, whose father owned a small hunting goods store in Vicksburg. Although his dad eventually sold it, Martin-Nez always wanted to own his own. Martin-Nez grew up hunting and fishing, but he also enjoyed playing football, baseball and basketball. He said it’s his own split interests in the outdoors and sports that prompted him to combine them both in one store.

“It was always a dream of mine to own a full-line sporting goods store,” he said. “Now it’s my dream to own two.”
