Historical society to sponsor Katrina program

Just a little over 10 years ago the residents of Brookhaven and Lincoln County experienced one of the worst storms in recent history.

Hurricane Katrina made landfall in the early hours of August 29, 2005, as a category 3 hurricane. She brought to Lincoln County an abundance of destruction, along with refugees from south Mississippi and Louisiana.

On Thursday, Oct. 22, the Lincoln County Historical and Genealogical Society will host “A Last Look Back at Katrina and How It Affected Lincoln County.” The program begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Jimmy Furlow Senior Citizen Center at 201 S. First St.

Lincoln County Civil Defense Director Clifford Galey will talk about how the county was affected as Katrina blew through the area, and what citizens and local government did during the weeks following.

The event is free and open to the public.

The Lincoln County Historical and Genealogical Society sponsors several informative programs each year.

The historical society, a 501c3 non-profit organization, welcomes any and all individuals to join. Membership is $20 a year.
