Offensive quartet leads Southern Miss over UTSA

HATTIESBURG (AP) – Jalen Richard and Ito Smith both rushed for over 100 yards, DJ Thompson and Michael Thomas went over 100 receiving and Southern Mississippi nearly tripled Texas San Antonio’s offensive output in a 32-10 win Saturday night.

Southern Mississippi (4-3, 2-1 Conference USA) had 556 yards to UTSA’s 205, and the Golden Eagles possessed the ball more than 35 minutes.

Thomas scored on a 47-yard pass from Nick Mullens on Southern Mississppi’s first possession. Stephen Brauchle hit three field goals in the second quarter to make it a 16-0 halftime lead. Mullens finished 23 of 31 for 343 yards with two scores and three interceptions.

Kerry Thomas Jr.’s 1-yard TD catch put UTSA (1-6, 1-2) on the board midway through the third quarter. Daniel Portillo kicked a 30-yard field goal to pull the Roadrunners within two scores, but Richard’s one-yard plunge in the fourth quarter put the game out of reach.
