Newton County sweeps Lawrence County

DECATUR – The Newton County Lady Cougars defeated the Lawrence County Lady Cougars in two games Saturday in the second round of the Class 4A state softball playoffs.

Newton County won 11-1 and 17-5 to end Lawrence County’s season.

The Monticello-based Lady Cougars concluded their softball season with a 25-4 record, while finishing in first place in Region 7-4A action with a undefeated 8-0 record.

Newton Co. 11, Lawrence Co. 1 

Both teams scored one run each in the first inning, before Newton County exploded to outscore Lawrence 10-0 in the third through fifth innings to secure the win.

Barri Rogers suffered the setback for LCHS with no strikeouts and five walks.

Sydney Pevey was the top hitter at the plate for Lawrence County with a double. Jordan Harp, Maddux Kirkland and Callie Fortenberry hit a single each.

Newton Co. 14, Lawrence Co. 5 

In Game Two, the Decatur-based Lady Cougars’ 10-run fifth inning was too much for Lawrence County to overcome as Newton County cruised to a 17-5 win in a six-inning contest.

Rogers absorbed the setback for the Monticello-based Lady Cougars with no strikeouts and two walks.

Amanda Rushing and Maddux Kirkland paced Lawrence County’s offense with two singles. Josey Nations, Zyon Feazell, Barri Rogers, Emalee Gaffney, Abbie Errington and Callie Fortenberry contributed a single each.
