MONTICELLO – Lawrence County opened its 2015-16 basketball season with a varsity double-header sweep of West Lincoln Friday night. In girls’ action, Vicki Rutland’s Lady Cougars pulled away in the second half to earn a 51-39 win over Lane Young’s Lady Bears. In the boys’ game, big man Keyshawn Feazell powered the Cougars to a 66-48 win.
The girls’ game was a tight, see-saw battle throughout the first half. Lawrence County led 22-21 at the intermission. In the second half, the Lady Cougars pulled away, powered largely by sophomore forward Camryn Davis. Davis enjoyed a double-double, with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
DeNeisha Dickson added nine points and four assists for the Lady Cougars, who return all five starters from last season’s 15-16 team.
“We’re known for our defensive energy,” Rutland said. “And we certainly brought that tonight. It was a good night for us. West Lincoln is a quality opponent, and they’re always going to be well-coached.
“We got some good minutes off the bench, but our free-throw shooting was atrocious. We’ve got to do better.”
The Lady Cougars made just 12 of 31 free throw attempts, for 39 percent.
West Lincoln got a good night from Hanna Moak, who tallied 15 points. Jana Case added nine. Skylar Hall had eight, and Layton Sills scored seven points.
The boys’ game featured a dandy shootout between Lawrence County’s 6’8″ center, Keyshawn Feazell, and West Lincoln’s hot-shooting guard duo of Ronnie Edwards and Ke-Shaun London. Feazell, who was named to the Clarion-Ledger’s “Dandy Dozen” squad earlier in the day, lived up to that billing. He had a huge night, with 30 points, 13 rebounds, and four steals. Many of Feazell’s points came on thunderous slam dunks.
London and Edwards, both seniors, combined for 38 of the Bears’ 48 points. London connected on three 3-pointers en route to a 21-point night. Edwards hit five 3-pointers in tallying 17 points. Adam Martinez scored seven points for the Bears.
Lawrence County was slated to take on host Pearl in the Pearl Classic Saturday. West Lincoln hosts Wesson on Tuesday.
