Loyd Star sweeps Amite County

LIBERTY – Loyd Star clinched a pair of Region 7-2A wins over Amite County Friday night.

In the girls’ contest, the Lady Hornets (13-1, 5-0) remain undefeated in division action after knocking off the Lady Trojans 53-48.

In boys’ action, the Hornets (7-7, 3-2) were victorious over the Trojans 56-45.

Loyd Star will resume action Tuesday as the Hornets and the Lady Hornets travel across Jackson Liberty Road to battle West Lincoln in three games. Junior varsity action begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity games at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Lady Hornets 53, Lady Trojans 48

It was a physical defensive contest in the first half as Loyd Star carried a slim 21-19 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Loyd Star closed with a 32-27 run to clinch the win.

“This was a physical game for both teams,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “The girls fought hard through four quarters and played good team ball. Overall, I was very pleased with their effort and glad to get the win.”

Makenzie Smith directed the Lady Hornets with a double-double performance of 24 points and 10 rebounds. Hannah Dickerson contributed nine points. 10 rebounds and had four blocked shots. Jordan Shelby provided seven points, six rebounds, two steals, two assists and had two blocked shots. Toni Banks netted six points. Faith Bergeron finished with five points and four assists. Lydia Britt scored two points.

Destiny Williams pumped in a game-high 27 points to lead the Lady Trojans. Deboney Wilson chipped in with 15 points.

Loyd Star 56, Amite Co. 45 

The Hornets quickly took charge of the first half as they secured a 29-17 lead.

Loyd Star edged Amite County 27-25 in the final two quarters to clinch the win.

“The guys played really well in the first half, but in the second half we had a tough battle on our hands,” said Britt. “We shot the ball really well at the free throw line finishing in 12-of-13, which helped us in getting the win. Overall, I was pleased with guys’ effort and glad to get the win.”

Levi Redd powered the Hornets with a double-double performance of 23 points, 10 rebounds, three steals, three assists and three blocked shots. Javion Beards chipped in 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Patrick Price contributed six points and had seven rebounds. Gregory Hooks netted five points, four rebounds and four steals. Cade Hodges scored four points. Avery Leggett grabbed six rebounds.

Darrion Robinson was the top scorer for the Trojans with 27 points.
