Wesson splits with Jefferson County

FAYETTE – The Wesson Cobras captured a big division victory Friday night, knocking off the Jefferson County Tigers 83-79 in Region 7-3A action.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Cobras lost to the Lady Tigers 58-27
The Wesson Cobras will host the Hazlehurst Indians Tuesday night. Varsity play begins at 6 p.m. for the girls, and the boys play at 7:30 in Hazlehurst.
Wesson 83, Jefferson County 79
Trailing 45-30 at halftime, the Cobras (14-8, 4-2) rallied back in the second half and outscored the Tigers 53-34 in the final two quarters to clinch a big district win.
“Early on we played with no intensity and Jefferson County took advantage of that as we were down big at halftime,” said Wesson coach Rusty Newman. “In the second half, we came out with some energy and fought ourselves back into the game. Once we got the lead, we managed to execute down the stretch to get the win. Overall, I’m proud of the guys for staying focused and not giving up. This was a big district win for us.”
Anthony Jones powered the Cobras with a double-double performance of 37 points,15 rebounds, two steals and two assists. Eric Rhymes pumped in 30 points and had nine rebounds, four steals and one assist. Shemar Dickerson provided 10 points. Kendrick Brown, Will Hulon and Malik Clay finished with two points each.
Lady Tigers 58, Lady Cobras 27
The Lady Tigers dominated the Lady Cobras in the first half to claim a 35-19 lead.
In the second half, the Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Cobras 23-8 to secure the win.
“This was a tough game against a good Jefferson County team,” said Newman. “The girls played hard but the Lady Tigers presented too many matchup problems for us.”
Jashia Smith was the top scorer for the Lady Cobras with nine points. Carnesha Green chipped in eight points. Aurianna Vaughn and Alayshia Vaughn scored four points each and Shelbi Maxwell had one point.
