Lady Cobras beat Florence

WESSON – The Wesson Lady Cobras defeated the Florence High School Lady Eagles 10-5 Monday night in their home opener.
The Lady Cobras will travel to Monticello today to face the Lawrence County Lady Cougars. The junior varsity contest begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6:15 p.m.

Amber Brinson collected the win on the mound for the Lady Cobras. She finished with four strikeouts and three walks.
Brinson also powered the Lady Cobras at the plate with two doubles and had two RBIs. Brooke Jones also collected two RBIs. Harmoni Ashley and Shelbi Maxwell provided a double and a single each. Arie Douglas hit a double and had two RBIs. Catherine Wilson, Katlyn Smith and Katie McSweyn had a single each.
The top defensive players for Wesson were Harmoni Ashley and Katlyn Smith with three outs each on first base and shortstop. Second baseman Arie Douglas and left-fielder Shelbi Maxwell contributed two outs each.
The Lady Eagles struggled against the tough Cobra defense but managed to put points on the board during the third and fifth innings.
Florence’s Taylor Clark started the game on the mound and had two walks. She was replaced during the second inning with Abby Smith. She had one strikeout and two walks.
The Lady Eagles were led by Sydni Lee and Skylar Hollingsworth with a double and single each. Gabby Hoffman hit a triple that put the first point on the scoreboard for the Lady Eagles in the third inning. Hanna Mitchell, Brennan Newell, and Chloe Barrier each hit a single.
Newell was the top defensive player for the Lady Eagles with seven outs and one assist at first base.
