A Monticello man fatally shot his girlfriend before shooting himself early today at Westover Apartments, according to Monticello Chief of Police David Stanley.

Stanley said 911 was called at 1:18 a.m.

Lawrence County Coroner Sandra Lambert identified the couple as Denzel C. Nash, 24, of Monticello, and Shaniqua Nicole Dawkins, 24, of Hattiesburg.

According to Stanley, Nash shot Dawkins and then shot himself.

Dawkins was pronounced dead at the scene. Nash was transported to the Lawrence County Hospital, where he was  pronounced dead.

A motive has not been determined and the incident remains under investigation by the Monticello Police Department.
