McComb man accused of stealing cigarettes, assaulting police
A McComb man accused of stealing 22 cartons of cigarettes, assaulting a police officer and felony fleeing was arraigned Monday in McComb Municipal Court.
Javontae Taliaferro remains in Pike County jail. His bond was set at $105,000, according to court records.
McComb police had been looking for Taliaferro since he jumped from a moving vehicle to avoid officers June 24. Police received information on the whereabouts of Taliaferro Friday and found him hiding in an entertainment center in the rear of a residence at 103 Johnson Ave., said detective Victoria Carter of the McComb Police Department.
Taliaferro was arrested without incident and transported to the McComb Police Department on the charges from the shoplifting incident, which occurred June 22.
Taliaferro is accused of stealing cigarettes valued at $1,200 from a Marathon service station at 203 Edgewood Drive.
The suspect was identified from security video at the store, Carter said.
Taliaferro was charged with felony shoplifting and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
It was when officers attempted to detain Taliaferro June 24, that he fled the scene as they approached his vehicle, said detective Sid Boyte.
During the chase, the suspect jumped from a moving vehicle to escape.
Taliaferro is also charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and felony fleeing, Boyte said.
