A 51-year-old Wesson woman was killed Wednesday in a crash involving a semi-truck, authorities said.

Cpl. Eric Henry with the Mississippi Highway Patrol said Rhonda Evans died at the scene of the accident, which happened in the northbound lane of I-55 near mile marker 61 in Copiah County.

Henry told the media that a Ford Expedition was headed north on I-55 when the SUV had a tire blow out, causing the driver to lose control, run off the road and overturn. The driver was taken to University of Mississippi Medical Center with injuries.

While MHP was working the accident, the traffic began to back up in the northbound lanes. An 18-wheeler traveling north slammed into the back of Evans’ Toyota pickup truck that was stuck in traffic. That caused the pickup truck to crash into the back of another 18-wheeler, authorities said.

Two of Evans’ grandsons who were passengers in the truck were flown to a hospital. Troopers said they are expected to recover.

The accident remains under investigation.
