St. James Missionary Baptist Church will sponsor a free family health fair Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as part of the church’s yearlong celebration of its 150-year anniversary.

“As one of the oldest African-American congregations in south central Mississippi, the pastor, Dr. Larry jointer has always stressed the importance of ministering to both soul and body,” said church member Pat Dow.

“If the body is healthy, then there is nothing to hinder ministering to those who do not know Christ.”

The theme of the wellness fair is “It’s a Family Affair.”

It will include demonstrations and display concerning health issues such as breast cancer for males and females, prostate cancer, heart disease, diabetes, domestic violence and bullying.

Health care professionals will be giving 10-minute presentations as will answer questions. Nursing and medical technology students, under guidance of professional health care personnel, will check vitals and perform screening tests, Dow said. All screenings are free.

A Girl-Trek walk will be held at 7 a.m. beginning in the church parking lot and the “weight-loss challenge” will come to its conclusion, she said. Fitbits will be awarded to the winning male and female participants.
