Funeral services for Ovia “Doodle” Grantham Sandifer, of Brookhaven, are today, Jan. 3, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Riverwood Family Funeral Service with burial at Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation is from 9 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Sandifer, 96, died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017, at Brookmanor Nursing Home.

She was born April 7, 1920. She graduated high school from Sweet Water Alabama in 1938 and Samford University’s nursing school in 1941. She joined the Red Cross in 1942 to enlist in the Nurses Army Corps.

She served as an Army nurse during World War II in the 32nd Infantry 3rd Army overseas for 18 months. She reached the rank of first lieutenant and received the Bronze Star from Gen. George H. Patton. She worked as a public health nurse from 1946-1952; and on staff at King’s Daughters Hospital from 1964-1972. She married Bob Sandifer Dec. 4, 1948, and they were married for 53 years. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and loved her Lord and church.

She was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church and worked with the WMU.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Ewing “Bob” Sandifer Jr.; parents, David R. Grantham and Georgia Mayton Grantham; son, David Nity Sandifer; brothers, Roger Grantham and LaGran Grantham; sisters, Alice Grantham and Izola Grantham Cave and nephew, Bobby Cave.

Survivors include her son, Ewing D. Sandifer III; daughters, Georgia Kiddy and husband, Bill, Sue Smith and husband, Keith; brother-in-law, Maxie Sandifer and wife, Clara and Gary Sandifer and wife, Grace; sisters-in-law, June Grantham, Julia Sandifer, Betty Sandifer, Shirley Sandifer; five grandchildren, Ewing “Chris” Sandifer IV , Stacy Sandifer Bond and husband, Doug, Brad Evans, Cassie Smith Case and husband, Karsten, Maggie Smith Woolley and husband Clay; four great-grandchildren, Layton Woolley, Macel Woolley, Jacob Case and Kade Case; nieces and nephews, Ernest Cave and wife, Pat, LaGran Cave and wife, Lois, Nell Cave Roberts, Penny Cave Andrews and husband, Ricky, Janet Cave, David Grantham and wife, Pat, and Rod Grantham.
