Wesson fights off Bogue Chitto in 74-67 win

The Wesson Cobras defeated the Bogue Chitto Bobcats Tuesday night by a final score of 74-67. The win moves Wesson to 9-6 overall on the season and the loss drops Bogue Chitto to 2-14 overall.
The Cobras had a 17-point lead going into the half, but the Bobcats clawed their way back and cut the Wesson lead to only four points. Wesson won the game from the free throw line in the fourth quarter with sophomore forward Jontavious Smith shooting a perfect 8-for-8 from the field, totaling 24 points, eight rebounds and four steals in the game.
“This game was a tale of two halves,” Wesson head coach Rusty Newman said. “I thought we played well the first half and brought a lot of intensity, but we came out dead in the second half and Bogue Chitto took advantage of that. I’m glad we were able to come out with the win.”
For Wesson, sophomore guard JD Allen was the top scorer with 27 points and had five rebounds, six steals and one assist. Wesson shot 14-of-24 from the free throw line in the game.
For the Bobcats, freshman forward Zach Upkins was the top scorer with 16 points, six steals on the game. Sophomore guard Henry Thomas had 10 points and six boards on the night and eighth grade center William Allen contributed as well with nine points and 10 rebounds. Bogue Chitto went 4-of-10 from the charity stripe for the game.
Lady Cats 63, Lady Cobras 26
The Bogue Chitto Lady Bobcats took control of the game from the opening tip and finished the game with a final score of 63-26 over the Wesson Lady Cobras. The win moves the Lady Cats to 6-7 overall and drops the Lady Cobras to 2-10.
“I’m proud of the girls’ team effort and hustle tonight,” Bogue Chitto head coach Christi Terrell said.
The Lady Cats started the game hot and took an early 13-point lead at the end of the first quarter with senior guard Terrah Nelson scoring 14 of the teams 20 points. Bogue Chitto held their lead going into the half by a score of 40-13. The Lady Cobras struggled on offense and the game ended with the Lady Bobcats maintaining their lead with a 63-26 victory.
For Bogue Chitto, Nelson ended the night with 20 points with six rebounds and three assists. Sophomore guard Baileigh Jackson had 10 points for the game, including two three-pointers. Senior forward Taneshia May contributed with nine points and senior Charysma Collins and sophomore Karly Leake each scored seven points. The Lady Bobcats shot 7-for-16 from the free throw line for the night.
”The girls played hard but we’ve got to cut down on turnovers and be more patient on offense,” Wesson head coach Candice McDuffey said.
Senior guard Aurianna Vaughn was the top scorer for Wesson with nine points, adding on three rebounds and two steals as well. Senior guard Alashya Vaughn had eight points and racked up eight rebounds and two steals as well. The Lady Cobras shot 4-of-8 from the free throw line for the game.
Wesson will host Hazlehurst Friday night and Bogue Chitto will travel to Tylertown to face Salem Friday night as well. Games times are 6 p.m. for girls and 7:30 p.m. for the boys.
