Co-Lin Wolves lose on the road to East Central

DECATUR – The Copiah-Lincoln Wolves were unable to overcome a strong second half outing by East Central. The Warriors scored 53 points in the second half to clinch an 88-75 victory. The loss moves the Wolves to 7-6 on the season and to 1-3 in South Division play. Co-Lin takes the floor again Monday, Jan. 23 as the Wolves hosts The Southwest Community College Bears at 8.
The Wolves started the game very slowly as East Central pulled away to a 12-1 lead in the first four minutes of action. The rough start did not deter the Wolves as they battled back over the next ten minutes and took a 29-28 lead with 5:28 remaining in the half. Action continued back and forth for the remainder of the half with the Warriors taking a three-point lead into the locker room.
Second half action resembled that of the beginning of the game. The Wolves struggled to get shots to fall, while East Central seemed to be unable to miss. The Warriors quickly stretched their lead to double digits and The Wolves were simply unable to recover in the final minutes.
Jonathan “Biscuit” Floyd led the Wolves with 21 points and six assists. Lamarcus Lee added another 18 points and eight rebounds, while Anthony Jones rounded out Co-Lin’s top scorers with 13 points.
Tonzell Handy finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors while Antonio Clark came off the bench to add 19.
Co-Lin shot 37 percent (23-for-63) from the field, 24 percent (6-for-25) from three-point range, and 74 percent (23-of-31) from the free throw line. The Wolves brought down 37 rebounds. East Central shot 54 percent (29-for-54) from the field, 43 percent (6-for-14) from three-point range, and 69 percent (24-for-35) from the foul line. The Lady Warriors posted 24 rebounds.
Lady Wolves defeat East Central on the road
DECATUR – A strong performance from Co-Lin’s starting five led the Lady Wolves to yet another victory. The solid shooting landed Co-Lin an 81-64 win over the East Central Lady Warriors and moved Co-Lin to 11-0 on the season and 3-0 in South Division play. The Lady Wolves return to Wesson Monday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. as the Lady Bears of Southwest travel to Mullen Gymnasium.
The Lady Wolves, for the second time this week, only trailed for less than one minute in the contest as the Lady Warriors netted a three-pointer on their opening possession. Alexus Holt responded and took the lead for Co-Lin with five points of her own. Baskets were traded for most of the opening quarter with Co-Lin only leading by one for several possessions.
Co-Lin ran away with the game late in the second quarter and throughout the third. The Lady Wolves went on a 19-2 run over a seven-minute span. The dominate defensive play bolstered Co-Lin’s efforts and energy, and allowed the team stretch the game out of EC’s reach in the fourth.
Four of Co-Lin’s starting five scored double digits. Tenazhia Hinkson who netted 17 points and brought down four rebounds, led the Lady Wolves. Both Diamond Smith and Brittany Rose, both freshmen, finished the game with 14 points and eight and four rebounds respectively. Alexus Holt poured in an additional 11 points and five assists. Karry Callahan Debraia Bell crashed the boards for the Lady Wolves with 12 and nine rebounds, respectively.
Laneisha Jeans led the Lady Warriors with 25 points, while Autumn Taylor and Curtisha Coleman both added 15 points.
Co-Lin shot an impressive 48 percent (34-for-71) from the field, 41 percent (7-for-17) from three-point range, and 50 percent (6-of-12) from the free throw line. The Lady Wolves brought down 54 rebounds. East Central shot 39 percent (20-for-51) from the field, 21 percent (4-for-19) from three-point range, and 53 percent (20-for-38) from the foul line. The Lady Warriors posted 24 rebounds.
