Funeral services for Hazel Deer Kent, of Bogue Chitto, are today, Jan. 27, 2017, at 3 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Smithdale with burial at the church cemetery. Rev. Burnett Carraway and Rev. Jim Bradford will officiate. Jones Family Funeral Service in McComb is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be today, Jan. 27, 2017, from 2 p.m. until the time of service at the church.

Mrs. Kent, 74, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017, at Silver Cross Nursing Home in Brookhaven. She was born Jan. 12, 1943, in McComb, to Herbert M. and Elease Hutchinson Deer. She worked as a nurse at Southwest Hospital as a private sitter. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Bogue Chitto. She has a great love and passion for gardening with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and she’s known for having the “greenest thumb around.”

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Tommy G. Kent; one son, Thomas Mark Kent; and one great-granddaughter, Shanna Bear Teague

Survivors are her son, Roger Kent and wife Robin, of Chatawa; daughter, Michelle Kent Teague and fiancé Howard Billingsley, of Ringgold, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Angela Kent, of Summit; a brother, Hubert Deer and wife Doris, of Smithdale; a sister, Patsy McInnis and husband Billy, of Bogue Chitto; grandchildren, Daniel Jesse and Melissa Doherty, of Summit, Meloni and Zach McDonald, of Melbourne, Florida, Kaile and Kyle Young, of Bogue Chitto, Summer and Dustin Orr, of Ringgold, Georgia, Dale Kent and Luke Teague, of Ringgold, Georgia, Amanda Kodie and Dusty Davis, of Bude, and Dennis Campbell, of Summit; great-grandchildren, Autumn and Jacob Teague, Raelynn “RaeRae” Orr, Ariana Camryn, Kailey Ray and Konner Young, Isabella Minor and Abbie Davis;  aunts, Eileen Cato, of McComb, and Audrey Wilson, of Byron, Georgia; a special family friend, Margaret West; and numerous other relatives and friends.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Silver Cross Nursing Home and a very special thanks to Sierra and Brittany for the care given to Mrs. Kent during her time there. To St. Luke Hospice Care Leanne Barfoot and Vella Coleman, thank you for all you did for her.

Pallbearers are Kyle Young, Dale Kent, Stacy Dillon, Howard Billingsley, Dennis Campbell, James Morgan, Larry Chambers and Ralph Deer.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Hazel Kent’s Cemetery Fund, Oak Grave Baptist Church.
