Wesson Cobras drop both games against Hazlehurst

The Wesson Cobras fought hard all night against the Hazlehurst Indians Tuesday, but fell short by a final score of 83-73. 

The Cobras and Indians were neck and neck the entire game with Hazlehurst holding a slight advantage through the first three quarters. The Cobras rallied in the fourth quarter with sophomore guard Shemar Dickerson putting Wesson ahead with 2:27 left on the clock. Hazlehurst retaliated and made free throws towards the end to take home the victory.

Senior guard Zymaya Walton was the top scorer for Hazlehurst with 28 points and 11 rebounds and junior guard Jakavius Tillman scored 20 points with six steals and five rebounds to round out the Hazlehurst scoring.

The top scorers for Wesson included Dickerson with 17 points and five rebounds and sophomore guard JD Allen with 15 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Freshman forward Kenner Bizot was next in scoring with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Wesson will travel to Franklin County on Friday.  Game times are 6 p.m. for the girls and 7:30 for the boys.

Hazlehurst 68, Wesson 35

The Hazlehurst Lady Indians hosted the Wesson Lady Cobras Tuesday night and took the win by a final score of 68-35.  The loss drops the Lady Cobras to 2-14 overall on the season and 0-5 in district play.

“In the first half, we came out strong, made some mistakes but pushed through them,” Wesson head coach Candice McDuffey said. “In the second half, we just lost energy and couldn’t do what we needed to do to put ourselves in a position to win.”

Both teams were tied at 11-11 after the first quarter, but Hazlehurst edged ahead with a score of 30-22 going into halftime.

The Lady Indians coasted in the second half and ended the game with a convincing 33-point win. Junior center Destiniqua Stewart was the top scorer for Hazlehurst with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Acacia Stewart followed up with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore center Madison added on 12 points and six rebounds as well.

The top scorer for Wesson was senior guard Aurianna Vaughn with 13 points, including three three-pointers, four rebounds and three steals as well. Freshman guard Shelbi Maxwell had eight points and senior guard Alashya Vaughn scored seven points and reeled in five rebounds to lead Wesson scorers.
