GULF SHORES, Ala. — The Brookhaven Academy Cougars were looking to tune up for the start of this week’s district play by participating in the Gulf Shores Baseball Classic during spring break.
The Cougars made a strong showing in their 10-2 win over the Jay High School Bulldogs out of Jay, Oklahoma.
The Cougars jumped out early by posting two runs in the first inning then exploded in the second inning with six runs, powered by back-to-back home runs from Madison Smith and O’Neill Burgos. Smith’s grand slam hooked around the left field foul pole and Burgos followed up with a tape measure shot over the center field wall to take the commanding lead.
Burgos, Nick Ogden and Dillon Burt led BA with two hits each. Fisher Warren, Carson Rounsaville, Taylor Freeny and Brady Spring each singled to add support to the Cougar 11-hit attack.
Warren picked up the win on the mound for the Cougars by striking out seven Bulldog batters in five complete innings of work. Brady Spring stepped in and finished off the final two frames, striking out two batters in relief.
“Fisher (Warren) had great command of his pitches today. His breaking stuff was good and he was hitting his spots,” Brookhaven Academy head coach Tyler Parvin said. “Brady (Spring) did a good job finishing it up in his first outing on the mound this year. We can expect to see more pitching from him this season.”
Kevin Sixkiller took the loss for the Jay Bulldogs.
Brookhaven Academy will kick off district play on Tuesday as Simpson Academy visits Harold Williams Ballpark. JV first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. followed by varsity action at 7 p.m.
