Co-Lin Lady Wolves sweep NWCC

Sophomores Kayla Britt and Kamryn Vanlandingham went 6-for-7 and 5-for-7 respectively to lead the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves to a sweep over the Northwest Lady Rangers. The Lady Wolves (9-15, 4-8) took the opener 5-2 and game two 8-5. Northwest falls to 13-11 overall, 7-5 in the conference.

“It was a good sweep of a solid Northwest squad,” said Lady Wolves head coach Allen Kent. “We got some timely hits and played better defensively.”

The Lady Wolves jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Alexsundria Thomas drew a walk. Logan Deroche followed with a bunt single. Sophomore Kamryn Vanlandingham smashed a three-run home run to left centerfield.

In the top of the fourth, the Lady Rangers plated two runs. Kailey Walker led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Sallie Rose Carver’s single to center field cut the Lady Wolves lead to 3-1. An error and Allison Williams’s RBI single to left field allowed Carver to score to pull Northwest to 3-2.

In the bottom half of the fourth, Vanlandingham drew a walk, stole second, and scored on Kayla Britt’s double to center field to extend Co-Lin’s lead to 4-2.

The Lady Wolves added an insurance run in the fifth, as Deroche’s bases loaded single to right field scored courtesy runner Bailey Root to give Co-Lin the 5-2 lead.

Root earned the win for the Lady Wolves allowing two runs on four hits, striking out two, and walking one tossing a complete game.

Tori Luke absorbed the loss for the Lady Rangers. She gave up five runs on seven hits, struck out two and walked six in five and two-thirds innings of work. Leeah Henson also saw action in the circle allowing three hits in a third of an inning.

At the plate, Britt went 4-for-4 with a double and three singles (1 RBI). Deroche was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles for an RBI. Vanlandingham had a home run for three RBIs. Also hitting safely were Dianna Hobgood, Jamie Martin, and Alex Anthony.

For Northwest, Walker, Ally Judkins, Carver (1 RBI), and Williams had a single apiece.

“Root pitched a great game and we played pretty solid defense behind her,” said Kent.

The Lady Wolves jumped out to an early lead in game two as they plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Vanlandingham and Britt led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Hobgood grounded to third and reached on an error giving Co-Lin a 2-0 lead. Martin singled and Mackenzie Byrd reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Anthony’s sacrifice fly to center scored Hobgood to give the Lady Wolves a 3-0 lead.

Northwest got on the board in the top of the second on a RBI double by Morgan Gresham.

Co-Lin took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the second. Byrd’s bases loaded single to right field scored Vanlandingham.

The Lady Wolves picked up another run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. Vanlandingham doubled to center. Britt drew a walk. Hobgood’s line drive single to right field scored Vanlandingham.

In the top of the fifth, the Lady Rangers closed the gap to 5-3 on Harley Smith’s RBI double and Gresham’s single.

Co-Lin added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Kinley Westerfield led off the inning with a single to center. Deroche reached on a bunt single. Vanlandingham doubled to centerfield to plate Westerfield to put the Lady Wolves up 6-3. With two outs, Hobgood’s 2-run line drive to left field scored Deroche and Vanlandingham as Co-Lin looked to be cruising.

But the Lady Rangers rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh. Sarah Taylor led off the inning with a double to center. Gresham singled to right field to score Taylor. With two outs, Ally Judkins singled to score Gresham as Northwest cut the lead to 8-5. Root forced Carver to ground out to Deroche to get the final out of the game.

Christian Black picked up the win for the Lady Wolves. She tossed five innings allowing three runs on nine hits, striking out four, and walking five. Root picked up the save pitching two innings allowing two runs on five hits.

Harley Smith took the loss giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits, striking out three and walking two in five innings of work. Alexis Winters threw the final inning allowing three earned runs on four hits, and striking out two.

Vanlandingham led Co-Lin’s 13-hit attack going 4-for-4 including a pair of doubles and a pair of singles for one RBI. Britt, Hobgood (five RBIs), and Byrd had a pair of singles. Also collecting a single apiece were Martin, Westerfield, and Deroche. Anthony picked up an RBI.

For Northwest, Gresham went 4-for-4 including a double and three singles for three RBIs. Taylor doubled and singled. Walker had a pair of singles. Smith doubled. Williams, Luke, Judkins, and Alexis McShan added a single apiece.

“Vanlandingham was big again going four for four,” said Kent. “Hobgood was clutch with to singles and five RBIs…Black was able to work around some walks, while Root came in and did a good job in relief to get the save.”

The Lady Wolves travel to Decatur today to take on the East Central Lady Warriors for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
