In the first meeting between the two Lincoln County and district rivals, Loyd Star used an eight-run first inning to crush the Enterprise Yellow Jackets Friday night 13-0.

The win keeps Loyd Star perfect on the season at 14-0 and 7-0 in district play and the loss drops Enterprise to 11-4 and 6-1 in district play.

“We really capitalized and got some big hits early,” Loyd Star head coach Jared Britt said. “We put on a big run gap early in the game and gave us some big run support for Cade (Foster). It was a big win for us.”

The Hornets jumped on the board early with a five hit, eight run first inning and used a good pitching performance from junior Cade Foster to stifle Enterprise.

With a 1-0 lead and men on base for Loyd Star, senior Bradyn Brister smacked a two-RBI double down the left field line to make it 3-0 Hornets. Two RBI singles later from senior Cole Smith and sophomore Dane Smith gave Loyd Star a 5-0 lead. The Hornets kept pouring it on in the first inning, which escalated with a two-RBI double to center field by sophomore James Beard to give the Hornets the 7-0 lead. Beard would later score from second on a wild pitch to make it 8-0 Loyd Star to end the first inning.

Foster took the hill for the Hornets and pitched two shutout innings. Foster did get himself into jams in the first and second innings.

Enterprise loaded the bases to start off the game in the top of the first with two outs, but Hodges got the strikeout to end the scoring threat.

Hodges gave up two big hits to freshman Austin Fugler and senior Reese Brocato to put men on second and third with two outs in the top of the second. Hodges struck out the next batter to end the scoring threat and shut down any hopes of a comeback.

“Cade has proven in the past that the moment is never too big for him,” Britt said. “He usually settles in and makes the pitches to get out of any kind of bind and tonight was just another example of that. He made his pitches and got out of it with his defense behind him.”

Freshman Colby Beard got the start for Enterprise on the mound and pitched 1.2 innings before senior Trevor Freeman came on in relief for Beard.

Winning in dominating fashion is nothing new for Loyd Star and doing it against a district rival was even better for the Hornets.

“It makes you feel confident going on as we move into district play and carrying into the next game,” Britt said. “It gives me a little bit of confidence and I know it gives the kids a lot of confidence to start out in a big series and beat them like that.”

Loyd Star and Enterprise will face off again Friday in a double-header at Enterprise. First pitch for game one is set for 5 p.m.
