BA Cougars beat Natchez Cathedral 9-1
The Brookhaven Academy Baseball Cougars hoped to kick start the week of district play with a strong showing against Natchez Cathedral Tuesday night.
Behind a solid pitching performance from freshman Brady Spring, the Cougars rolled over the Green Wave by a score of 9-1.
After Cathedral tied the score at 1-1 in the top half of the third inning, the Cougars responded with four runs in the bottom of the third and another four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Madison Smith carried the offense for BA with a pair of two-run home runs in the third and fourth innings. Nick Ogden singled twice for the Cougars in support. O’Neill Burgos and Taylor Freeny each doubled for the Cougars on the night. Brady Spring, Dillon Burt and Jaden Clark added singles to round out the Cougar nine-hit attack.
“This was a total team effort offensively and defensively tonight,“ BA head coach Tyler Parvin said after the game. “We can compete every night out if we play at this level consistently.”
Spring picked up the win for the Cougars pitching five and a third innings, giving up just one run on five hits while striking out seven Green Wave batters in his evening of work.
“Brady (Spring) had a great outing for us tonight,” Parvin said. “He stepped up when we needed some innings out of him and did a fantastic job.”
Caden Poole took the loss for Cathedral on the mound.
Brookhaven Academy will complete the home and home series at Cathedral on Friday night. JV first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. followed by varsity action at 7 p.m.
