IUKA (AP) — Tishomingo County’s sheriff says he has fired a correctional officer for failing to report a missing jail inmate.

Sheriff John Daugherty says surveillance footage showed inmate Dustin McCoy escaped from the county jail around 10 p.m. Wednesday.  Daugherty tells WTVA-TV that the guard, 22-year-old Dillon Davis, performed a head count of all inmates during the night but didn’t report McCoy missing until 7 a.m. Thursday.

Daugherty says Davis was terminated. He had been employed by the jail for about three months.

The sheriff’s department has asked the U.S. Marshal’s Service for help with the search for McCoy, who had been in custody on felony drug offenses and various misdemeanors. Daugherty says he believes McCoy had outside help in his escape.
