Imagine a world seen through Dr. Seuss’ eyes.
There’s The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz and even a Who or two. And it’s not just imagination. “Seussical Jr.” will be presented for five shows — June 22-25 — at the Haven Theatre.
The show is the finale of the Broadway Jr. summer workshop. Registration and auditions are today beginning at 6 p.m. at the Haven.
“We’re expecting good turnout,” said Tommy Sproles, vice president of the Brookhaven Little Theatre board and co-director of BLTeens.
The cost of $150 includes a month-long workshop, cast T-shirt and costume fee.
The four weeks of theatre instruction will be taught and directed by seasoned BLT veterans. They’ll be joined by guest artists Chris Roebuck of New Stage Theatre in Jackson, Tulane University instructor Gary Rucker of Rivertown Theatre and Matthew Morgan of Morgan Casting, he said.
New this year is a curriculum in daily classes that will introduce the campers to all the elements of theatre production.
“Participants will receive instruction in acting, improvisation, stage movement, musical theatre, dance, voice and diction, and auditioning,” he said.
The camp is open to youth entering seventh grade and not older than 18 by June 25.
The camp will be held Monday through Thursday from 4-8 p.m. beginning Tuesday, May 30, to allow for the Memorial Day holiday. Class will also be held on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional rehearsals may be required, Sproles said.
The final production will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights with a Saturday and Sunday matinee.
For the younger kids, BLT will offer a children’s summer drama camp July 17-28.
It’s for all rising first through seventh graders and will also be held at the Haven. Classes are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon.
Cost is $175 which includes a T-shirt, daily snack and an 8×10 souvenir cast photo. A reduced price of $150 is offered for additional siblings in the same family.
Performances of “Jungle Book Kids” will be presented to family, friends and the public July 27-28 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door starting at 5:30 p.m. Deadline to register is July 7.
