Polls are open today in Brookhaven and Wesson

Polls are open in Brookhaven and Wesson for general municipal elections today.

In Brookhaven, voting is open until 7 p.m. at the following precincts:

• Ward 1: Bi-Centennial Building on 200 Main St.

• Ward 2: Alexander Jr. High School on 713 Beauregard St.

• Ward 3: Lincoln County Governmental Complex in the city boardroom on 301 South First St.

• Ward 4: Brookhaven Elementary School in the auditorium on 300 South Church St.

• Ward 5: Brookhaven Recreation Department in the main room on 689 Hwy. 51 North

• Ward 6: Mamie Martin School in Room A-1 on 420 Vivian Merritt St.

Brookhaven, based on its population of  12,513, according to the 2010 Census, is divided into six wards with an alderman-at-large as well. Mayor and aldermen are considered full-time jobs. Aldermen are paid an annual salary of $18.447.36. The mayor’s annual salary is about $71,000. The annual salary of the police chief is $67,000.

In Brookhaven, voters in the general election can choose between Republican, Democrat and independent candidates, said Lincoln County Circuit Clerk Dustin Bairfield.

Candidates in Brookhaven are:

Mayor — Republican Joe Cox (inc.) and Democrat David Smith.

Ward 3 — Independent LaMareo “Big Moe” Brown and Democrat Mary H. Wilson (inc.).

Ward 6 — Republican Gene Buckles,  independent Shelley Harrigill, Democrat David McCoy and independent Harold Rowe.

Alderwoman-at-Large — Democrat Marilyn Dow-Harris and Republican Karen Sullivan (inc.).

Police chief — Democrat Kenneth Collins and Republican Jason Gaskin.

Ward 1, Ward 2 and Ward 4 aldermen were decided in the primaries. Ward 5 alderman Fletcher Grice did not have an opponent.

Of the 7,451 voters registered in Brookhaven, only 3,032 — or 41 percent — cast a ballot in the primary.

All candidates in Wesson run as independents.

On the Wesson ballot will be:

Mayor — Rosa Harris, Alton Shaw (inc.) and Marty Stroud.

Ward 1 — Mike Douglas (inc.) and Larry Hall.

Ward 2 — Jarrad Ashley, Dirk Chrestman and John Welter (inc.).

Alderman-at-Large — Stephen Ashley and Ric Crockett (inc.).

Ward 3 Alderman Billy Ellison and Ward 4 Alderman Michael King faced no opposition.

The Brookhaven Board of Aldermen and the Wesson Board of Aldermen will both have their regular meetings today. Brookhaven’s board will meet in the supervisor’s board room at the Lincoln County Government Complex at 6:30 p.m. since voting will be underway in the city’s boardroom.Wesson aldermen will meet across the street from Town Hall at the Wesson Public Library at 6 p.m., said Town Clerk Linda Dykes.
