The Brookhaven Building is open today as a shelter for anyone who needs a place to stay through storms expected tonight.
Located at 1154 Beltline Drive, the shelter will be operated by the City of Brookhaven, said Mayor Joe Cox.
The shelter will stay open until 9 p.m. unless someone is using it, he said. If it’s being used, the city will discuss keeping it open Friday morning.
It is a no-pet shelter.
Individuals should bring any prescription medication as well as bedding and food. Chairs and tables will be provided.
The National Weather Service says severe storms are possible for the entire area through this evening with damaging winds and tornadoes being the primary risks. In addition, flooding and flash flooding will be likely as periods of heavy rain associated with Tropical Depression Cindy move through the region. A few strong to severe storms will be possible Friday where damaging winds and brief tornadoes will be possible. Locally heavy rainfall over saturated grounds may lead to flooding and flash flooding for much of the area.
