GREENWOOD (AP) — Authorities say a shooting by a 5-year-old has left his 6-year-old playmate in critical condition.
The Greenwood Commonwealth reports a 5-year-old boy found a loaded .40-caliber handgun while searching underneath a couch for his shoes and socks. The child was playing with the gun when it discharged, and shot the 6-year-old on Monday. Authorities say the child was shot in the abdomen area.
Greenwood Police Chief Ray Moore says an adult man and a third child were at the residence at the time of the shooting. The age of the third child is unknown.
The 6-year-old was airlifted to the hospital and moved to the pediatric intensive care unit.
Moore says police are still investigating the shooting.
