JACKSON (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of an infant girl who was struck by a vehicle southwest Mississippi.

Perry County Sheriff Mitch Nobles told the Clarion Ledger that the incident occurred Sunday evening, but it’s unclear how the child got onto the road. The name of the infant has not been released.

Nobles says the infant was under the age of 1.

The infant was taken to the Stone County Hospital and transferred from there to the University of Mississippi Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
