KILN (AP) — The chief of a volunteer fire department in a small Mississippi city is charged with stealing its money.

The Sun Herald reports Earl James Necaise and his wife, Linda Eldridge, are charged with embezzling money from the volunteer fire department in Kiln. Necaise is the department’s fire chief. His wife served as its bookkeeper.

Investigator A.J. Gambino of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office says an investigation found the couple stole about $6,500 over a two-year period from checking and savings accounts where the fire department kept its money. He said the department is funded through the Hancock County Utility Board and private donations.

Gambino said both Necaise and Eldridge turned themselves in after arrest warrants were issued.
